With voyeuristic intensity, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster explores the intricate connections that are created, nurtured, and challenged between members of a long-lasting band. That this intimate odyssey of group therapy and self-discovery involves Metallica--the most successful heavy metal group of all time--is just one reason this film is so uniquely fascinating. Having proven their documentary skills with Brother's Keeper and Paradise Lost (which included Metallica in its soundtrack), filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky spent two years with Metallica as the band survived the defection of long-time bassist Jason Newsted, struggled to record St. Anger, and recruited $40,000-per-month "performance enhancement coach" Phil Towle to counsel members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett as they confronted alcoholism, creative obstacles, and themselves in an effort to determine the viability of Metallica's future. With sincere hope, honest discussion, and the hiring of new bassist Robert Trujillo, Metallica battle their personal and professional demons, showing the vulnerable side of a business that thrives on raging testosterone. The effort pays off for everyone involved, especially the fans: Like the ultimate backstage pass, Some Kind of Monster is a healing journey into the hard-beating heart of rock & roll. --Jeff Shannon No Track ListingSystem Requirements:The film that Spin calls "as worthy of a place in the rock-doc pantheon as Don t Look Back and Gimme Shelter" is an intensely intimate look at one of the biggest hard rock bands of all time. Some Kind of Monster takes you inside the studio and into the psyches of Metallica as they record their Grammy-winning album St. Anger while battling their way through addiction fatherhood backlash from fans and near-total disintegration during the most turbulent period of their twenty-year history. Jam-packed with bonus features this rock n roll psychodrama is unlike anything you ve ever seen!Format: DVD AUDIO Genre: MUSIC DVD/CONCERTS Rating: NR UPC: 097368863743 Manufacturer No: 886374 |

This enormous live box set is a necessity for the hardcore Metallifan, though casual fans (if Metallica has any casual fans) might be scared off. It contains material up to and including the self-titled "black" album, including concert favorites "Creeping Death" and "Seek & Destroy," as well as classics like "For Whom the Bell Tolls," "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," and "Fade to Black." There are also a couple of ripping-fast solos from Jason Newsted and Kirk Hammett, and covers of "Last Caress," "Am I Evil?" and "Stone Cold Crazy." The videos are from a 1992 San Diego concert and a 1989 stop on the Damaged Justice tour in Seattle; both are guaranteed to turn any fan who hasn't had the considerable pleasure of hearing this seminal metal band live green with envy. Pricey, but very highly recommended. --Genevieve Williams Raise your horns for this sweet Metallica box set that features 3 CDs, 2 DVDs (with a 72 page full-color book on DVD 2), a Metallica stencil so you can bomb their logo all over, backstage pass and screensavers. © 2002 Elektra |

You'll want this for the packaging alone. A matte black box with high gloss black ink, the set includes all 8 Ozzy era Sabbath slabs plus DVD with 5 performances. 80 page black suede book includes notes, celebrity praise and timeline.© 2004 Rhino One can make the case that the Beatles, while the most important band of all time, wasn't the most influential. Decades after Black Sabbath laid down the commandments of heavy metal--lyrically, not for the squeamish; musically, dynamic and resolutely heavy--their impact remains improbably undiminished. One needed only to hear the first notes of the eponymous track on their eponymous 1970 debut to know that a new régime had arrived. And while one could (and should!) have mocked them, they would not be stopped. Black Box includes the eight albums recorded between 1970 and 1978 by the founding lineup--Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, Ozzy Osbourne, and Geezer Butler--in one suitably weighty package. Forgoing bonus tracks (aside from an entertaining but brief four-track DVD extra), the box is rounded off with an impressive 80-page booklet. While the foursome was considerably less fearsome by the time they checked out with Never Say Die, more than half of this collection represents heavy metal with a lasting impact. --Steven Stolder |
