Kids' Favorite Songs kicks off with a cackle-worthy parody of Bob Dylan doing "Old McDonald," and from there the groovy gags keep comin' 'round the mountain. Everywhere Elmo turns on Sesame Street monsters spontaneously burst into song, and all because they want him to feature their favorite tunes on his forthcoming radio countdown. For Telly, winnowing the hits to one is akin to Cookie Monster choosing between a macaroon and a figgie bar: at first he's sure that "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" lights his fire, but then he says bye-bye to a black sheep. The street heaves a collective sigh pavementward when word comes down that the countdown is strictly a numbers gig, no music involved. Only Sesame Street could weave well-loved musical numbers around a simple numbers lesson with such wacky pizzazz, making this a countdown that's no letdown for high-spirited parent-preschooler combos. --Tammy La Gorce

List Price: $9.93
Sale Price: $4.39

Everyone's favorite preschool monster demonstrates three activities in this compilation of some popular "Elmo's World" segments from Sesame Street. Joining him are segment regulars Dorothy the pet goldfish and Mr. Noodle, the lovable, bumbling adult stand-in for children, who makes mistakes but perseveres until he gets it right. In each episode, real children also take turns mastering the skill. In "Dancing," Elmo shows off his finesse at the flamenco and hula, while the children choose more free-form moves. (Elmo's monster friend Zoe also makes a cameo appearance.) In "Books," a boy and his father visit the library in search of dinosaur books. And in "Music," kids play the flute and violin, while Mr. Noodle is a little slow in learning to bang the drum. For parents who meant to tape the "Elmo's World" segments, but never quite did it, this 45-minute video is a lucky break. Primarily for ages 2-5, but Elmo fans of all ages will enjoy it. --Kimberly Heinrichs

The Kid from Brooklyn [VHS] The Kid from Brooklyn [VHS]
List Price: $14.95
Sale Price: $3.00
Average Rating:

There's little question that the brilliant Danny Kaye did some of his finest--and most memorable--work in the lush and lavish Samuel Goldwyn musicals that he made both during and immediately after World War II. The Kid from Brooklyn, based on the play The Milky Way, is no exception. The plot concerns Burleigh Sullivan, a kindly milkman who is duped into thinking he's championship-boxer material, and Kaye is again paired with Virginia Mayo, who teamed with him (ever so briefly) in Up in Arms, then as his leading lady in Wonder Man, and later in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and A Song Is Born. The performances from Kaye and his supporting cast are topnotch. Notable are Walter Abel as the comically manic fight promoter Gabby Sloan; a wry Eve Arden as Gabby's long-suffering gal pal; Steve Cochran as Speed, the "real" boxer who's actually a nice guy; Lionel Stander (later of Hart to Hart) as Spider, the put-upon trainer; and a truly sensational Vera-Ellen--who has completely amazing dance numbers (notably "What's Your Name?"). The underrated Vera-Ellen plays Burleigh's sweet sister, who falls for Speed. Familiar Kaye collaborators Sammy Cahn, Sylvia Fine (Kaye's wife), Max Liebman, and Jule Styne provide the film with catchy, lively tunes that still sound fresh. Legendary cinematographer Gregg Toland gives the colorful film a lovely look. --N.F. Mendoza

Elvis Presley tries on boxing gloves for Kid Galahad, one of his post-Army pictures that still has some fresh air and innocence in it. First spotted crooning from the back of a pickup truck, Elvis plays an ex-G.I. newly returned to his foresty birthplace, where shifty Gig Young runs a boxing camp. Naturally the kid turns out to have talent with the gloves, and a gamblers/mobsters/boxing formula soon kicks in. Meanwhile, Elvis turns his attention to Joan Blackman (from Blue Hawaii) and Young resists making an honest woman of girlfriend Lola Albright. Charles Bronson, who didn't get on well with Elvis, has a hefty role as an incorruptible trainer. The songs squeezed in around this are humdrum, and even the best ones can't accurately be described as rock & roll. Director Phil Karlson, a dab hand at action films (The Phenix City Story), gets some savagery into the fight scenes, and the early location work has a nice breezy feel. As for Presley himself, the early signs of stupor are beginning to be apparent; after the enjoyable opening reel he lacks the old spirit, looking understandably unengaged by the material or his co-stars. --Robert Horton

There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favorite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar for "the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." In other words, the movie is great. --Doug Thomas

A gold member of the Christmas classic elite, Frosty The Snowman has entertained several generations of children and adults with its charming holiday magic. Jimmy Durante narrates this 1969 animated creation that features the birth of Frosty, a happy upbeat snowman brought to life by a magical hat. The story is based on the popular Christmas song of the same name, and Durante's narration and singing brings the animation itself to life. One of the best holiday cartoon specials ever created, Frosty The Snowman will be a part of Christmas celebrations for years to come.

Frosty The Snowman follows the exploits of a group of school children trapped at school on Christmas Eve. Feeling guilty that her students are forced to attend class on Christmas Eve (with snow outside nonetheless), a schoolteacher hires a local magician named Professor Hinkle as entertainment. But Professor Hinkle is anything but a master of his trade. He entertains the kids only by means of their laughter as his ridiculous screw-ups. Frustrated by his failure to perform the famous magic trick of "pulling a rabbit out of a hat," Hinkle hurls his old top hat out the window. But when the children are dismissed from class, the hat finds its way onto the head of a snowman named Frosty.

A gust of wind blows Professor Hinkle's discarded hat onto the lifeless snowman's head, and "presto"! ...Frosty the snowman comes to life with a passionate bellow of "Happy Birthday"! Immediately, Professor Hinkle decides that he wants to keep his hat after all (so he can profit from its obvious magic powers), but the kids manage to fight off his advances in order to save Frosty. But Hinkle is the least of Frosty's worries. The thermometer is on the rise, and the kids conclude that Frosty needs to get to the North Pole or else he'll melt away. Together, they travel to the local train station to buy Frosty a ticket.

Finding the ticket price too hefty, Frosty and his friend Karen become stowaways on a north-bound train. What they don't know is that Professor Hinkle is hot on their trail, and he'll do anything to eliminate Frosty and steal the hat. Will Frosty survive? Only the appearance of another magical Christmas icon can save the day...

A holiday television classic rivaled by none, Frosty the Snowman is brilliant Christmas television programming the entire family can enjoy. Its central theme of life and death are aptly portrayed by a snowman's good cheer and the love a young girl harbors for him. Frosty's charisma solidifies this as an enduring TV classic, right up there with all-time greats such as Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964), A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965), and How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)...
