Movie DVD

Soul Food is the kind of movie that seems to have been blessed throughout its low-budget production, and it's got a quality of warmth and charm that fits perfectly with its authentic drama about a large African-American family in Chicago. Twenty-eight-year-old writer-director George Tillman Jr. drew autobiographical inspiration from his upbringing in Milwaukee, and on a well-spent $6.5 million budget he succeeded where similar films (including Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back) fell short: He depicts his many characters with such depth and sympathy that, by the time they have weathered several family crises, we've come to care and feel for them and the powerful ties that bind them together. As seen through the eyes of Tillman's young alter ego Ahmad (Brandon Hammond), the film primarily focuses on the rivalries and affections that rise and fall among Ahmad's mother (Vivica A. Fox) and her two sisters (Vanessa L. Williams, Nia Long). Through them, and through the weekly Sunday dinners cooked with love by their mother, Big Mama (Irma P. Hall), we witness marital bliss and distress, infidelity, success, failure... in short, the spices of life both bitter and sweet. But when Big Mama falls into a diabetic coma, Ahmad watches as his family begins to fall apart without the stability and love that Big Mama provided with every Sunday meal. Tillman's touch can be overly nostalgic, melodramatic, and cloyingly sentimental, but never so much that the movie loses its firm grip on reality. As a universal portrait of family life, Soul Food ranks among the very best films of its kind--believable, funny, emotional, and always approaching its characters (well-played by a uniformly excellent cast) with a generous spirit of forgiveness and understanding. As satisfying as one of Big Mama's delicious dinners, Soul Food is the kind of movie that keeps you coming back for more. --Jeff Shannon

Soul Food: The Final Season Soul Food: The Final Season

Soul Food comes to a satisfying conclusion with surefooted confidence. This series' mix of sex, drama, and social commentary is in full bloom in this final season: Teri (Nicole Ari Parker), reeling from her breakup with Damon (Boris Kodjoe), has a serious of troubled liaisons; Bird (Malinda Williams) and Lem (Darrin Dewitt Henson) grapple with infidelity and the lingering effects of Lem's criminal past; Maxine (Vanessa Williams) and Kenny (Rockmond Dunbar) must work through more subtle conflicts in their marriage, while Maxine frets about the girls Ahmad (Aaron Meeks) chooses to date. The show skillfully blends serious plotlines with comic bits, juxtaposing (for example) a thoughtful discussion about nuances of skin color within the African-American community with a farcical bit about an X-rated film being shot in Kenny's garage. In fact, the writing, directing, and acting have never been smoother; even more melodramatic plot turns (for example, Bird gets kidnapped by a crime boss and Lem has to rescue her) somehow manage to stay just grounded enough to get by, while the vast majority of the season is solid and compelling. Marriage, dating, and family strife have always been Soul Food's bread and butter, and this season continues to be a remarkably genuine portrait of human relationships. The show resists making its characters perfect role models; as a result, Maxine and Kenny's marriage becomes admirable for both how they fight and how they function. As the show navigates its final episodes, the pitch-perfect acting demonstrates what a true ensemble this cast has become. Uplifting without being cloying, sexy without being cheap, political without being preachy, the final season of Soul Food is thoroughly enjoyable. --Bret Fetzer

Soul Food - The Third Season Soul Food - The Third Season

Soul Food - The Third Season wastes no time in diving into sex, family squabbles, and workplace conflicts--the issues that this show wrestles with so very well. As the season begins, Kenny (Rockmond Dunbar, Prison Break) and Maxine (Vanessa Williams, Melrose Place) have separated and fight bitterly, to the anguish of their oldest son Ahmad (Aaron Meeks); Teri (Nicole Ari Parker, Brown Sugar) is offered a partner position at her former law firm when a powerful New York firm (run by Faye Dunaway, her face a scary mask of too much plastic surgery)--but what she thought would be her dream job proves full of treacherous compromises; Damon (Boris Kodjoe, Madea's Family Reunion), unable to face his past troubles, slips into alcoholism; and while the marriage of Bird (Malinda Williams, First Sunday) and Lem (Darrin Dewitt Henson, Stomp the Yard) seems to have found a steady groove, Bird's potential career as a TV celebrity (and the new relationships that result) threatens that stability, as does a dark figure from her past. Good writing is what makes the turbulent lives of these three sisters and their husbands, sons, and lovers seem endlessly rich. Occasionally there's a forced storyline--for example, Damon is literally haunted by his dead ex-girlfriend--but even that uncharacteristic plot came to a graceful conclusion. If there's a weakness, it's that several conflicts are resolved too quickly; some of the strongest material comes from longer character arcs. There are a number of knockout guests (including Terrence Howard, Hustle & Flow, and particularly Kimberly Elise, Diary of a Mad Black Woman), but it's the regular cast that gives this show its emotional heft; even comic sequences, such as when Ahmad keeps catching his parents having sex, are treated with grounded emotion. At its best, Soul Food offers a more honest depiction of how men and women relate than you'll find almost anywhere on television; the give and take of marriage, with its necessary frustrations and unexpected rewards, is shown in all its messy glory. The Third Season contains 20 episodes from 2002 and 2003, half of which were initially released as the show's fourth season. --Bret Fetzer
